The Unhackable Life Skill
I love a good lifehack. Save your eyerolls, I know that’s a word that’s been one of the more annoying, gimmicky hashtags to flood the internet over the past several years — and I know that most lifehacks aren’t even necessary. In fact, some of them are downright asinine.
(My favorites are the ones that are just clearly work-arounds for bad behavior… like covering your computer keyboard with cling wrap to avoid food and drinks spillage. Instead of, you know, not sloppily eating your burrito over equipment that costs hundreds of dollars.)
Still, the core mindset behind any lifehack is one I admire: Life is hard — let’s make it easier for ourselves. Who’s not down for that? People who create and share lifehacks, your hearts are in the right place, and I salute you.
I find that the best hacks are the things that help us reverse-engineer our daily habits. Always rushing around in the mornings? Prep the night before: Hang up an outfit, set out your supplies for breakfast, tidy up your room a little. Addicted to grabbing chips or candy at every check-out line you stand in? Reach for the granola thing you stashed in your bag earlier. (It won’t taste as good as Reese’s Cups, but pat yourself on the back anyway. Processed sugar is an absolute monster.)
